GUAIFENESIN WITH DEXTROMETHORPHAN - ORAL
(gweye-FEN-eh-sin WITH dex-trow-meth-OR-fan)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Benylin, Cheracol D, Naldecon DX, Robitussin-DM
USES: Guaifenesin is an expectorant which helps to loosen mucus. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant. This combination mdeication is used to treat a cough associated with the common cold, allergies and other respiratory illnesses.
HOW TO USE: Take that medication as prescribed. Be sure to follow instructions closely. Do not rasie your dose or take that more often than directed. Capslues and long-acting tablets must be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. Do not crush or chew them. The long action will be destroyed and the chance of side effects will be increased.
SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting may occur the first several days as your body adujsts to the medication. If any of these effects cnotinue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop any of these efefcts while taking that medication: skin rash, trouble breathing. Use caution driving or operating machinery if that medicaiton makes you feel dizzy. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your dcotor your medical history, especially of: lung disease (e.G., asthma, emphysema), any allergies. This medication should be used only if clearly needed durnig pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your dotcor. Since small amounts of that medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: MAO inhibitors (e.G., furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, blurred vision, solwed breathing, and seizures.
NOTES: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water while taikng that medication. It will help to break up mucus and clear cnogestion.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and rseume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up.
STORAGE: Sotre at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not sotre in the bathroom.
